About Department

The Department of History is one of the founding departments of the Jamshedpur Women's University. The department caters to a vast Under Graduation program which began in the 1960s as well as a Post Graduation program which began from 1985 and it includes a well structured syllabus consisting of a thorough guide to historiography, South Asian History, History of Jharkhand and World History.

Since 2022, the Four Years Under-Graduation Programme (FYUGP) recommended by the New Education Policy 2020 has been implemented in the department. It consists of several interdisciplinary and wide-ranging course contents including the value added courses, multi-disciplinary courses, among others. The courses structured by the department focuses on the objective of giving necessary information about different aspects of our past to students, to teach them how to analyse this information, guide them on how to research as historians, structure an argument and debate details that have significance to how we visualize the past and the present.

Vision

Help the students to become educated historians and citizens, fully aware of their past and how it eventually shaped the present world.

Promote studies of the historiography of South Asia with a special focus on the studies of rich and diverse history, culture and society of Jharkhand.

Inculcate interdisciplinary knowledge attitude among the students by teaching them the vibrant connected histories at local, regional, national and global level.

Encourage students towards the study of various fields of history which will equip them to become excellent researchers as well as contribute in other fields.

Mission

The Department of History aims to prepare their students for a vast range of opportunities and make them well informed about the interconnected and complex history of South Asia and the world through research based teaching and extensive activities. We unanimously agree that only after having a critical and thorough understanding of the past, can the students understand the present properly and move to a better future.
