FACULTY/DEPARTMENTS

University Department of Political Science

About Department

The department of Political Science, under the faculty of Social Sciences, was established in1960 as one of the earliest departments of the then Jamshedpur Women’s University.

Since its inception, the department has been working in the field of women education and empowerment. It sees its role in providing young minds a space where they can engage in critical thinking and share their views freely. It seeks to create an environment where young women can learn to think analytically and reflect critically. The department also tries to work on the challenging enterprise of understanding multifaceted societies and their politics. It makes its contribution towards the development of an intellectual and academic environment through which a peaceful and harmonious society based on the principles of fairness and justice can be achieved.

The Department offers undergraduate (B.A.), postgraduate (M.A.) and Ph.D. programmes in the subject. It has been offering these courses to its students according to the latest framework of syllabus prescribed by the UGC from time to time. In the preceding years, we had adopted the CBCS framework for UG courses since 2016 and LOCF for both UG and PG programs since 2020 enabling our students to remain updated and at par with other students in the country. We take pride in the fact that a considerable number of our students compete and qualify for various national-level exams in the subject.

Since 2022, the Four Years Under-Graduation Programme (FYUGP) recommended by the New Education Policy 2020 has been successfully running in the department. It consists of an array of interdisciplinary and wide-ranging course contents. The objective of the curriculum designed by the department is to expose its students to all branches covering theoretical, conceptual and empirical aspects of the discipline of political science which in turn enable students with the necessary conceptual awareness needed to undertake further specialized studies and research activities. The intake for the Undergraduate course is approx.150 and for the Post-graduate Course, it is 100.

Our students also get the opportunity to do research by enrolling themselves in research program offered here. Currently three students are pursuing their PhD the department.

Vision

The Department intends to pursue academic excellence and the all-round development of its students. Various courses at the department intend to develop cognitive skills and impart value-based education among young women of the Kolhan region. It works hard in fulfilling its responsibilities towards women's education and empowerment. They are encouraged to become original thinkers, honest researchers and responsible citizens capable of playing an active and effective role in nation-building.

Mission

We endeavour to impart value-based quality education to girls in the primarily tribal belt. We wish to engage with teaching and research of a high quality in the field of political science adopting an interdisciplinary approach wherever necessary. We work towards creating a favourable learning atmosphere marked by a strong student-teacher bond. Our mission is to develop critical insight for original, innovative and creative ideas among students. We at the department design courses that can make the students academically proficient and practically vibrant to face real-life situations. Our mission is to make the department a centre for excellence in India.

By means of meaningful academic interventions, we are creating a generation of future citizens that possess moral commitment for ideas like rights, liberties and justice needed for a healthy society and a better tomorrow.
