The department of Political Science, under the faculty of Social Sciences, was established
in1960 as one of the earliest departments of the then Jamshedpur Women’s college.
The courses offered are one of the most sought courses in the region. The Department prides
itself in offering the latest syllabus in the subject to its students as and when prescribed by the
UGC. Working with this aim the Department has been offering six semesters Under-graduate
BA (Hons.) in Political Science and four semesters Post-graduate MA Courses in Political
Science under the choice-based credit system (CBCS) guidelines since 2016 and 2017
respectively. Since 2020 the department has focussed on incorporating learning outcome
based curriculum framework (LOCF) at both the undergraduate and post-graduation level.
Since 2022 the under graduation course will follow the Four Years Under graduation
Programme( FYUGP) as recommended by the NEP2020 with interdisciplinary and wide
ranging course contents. The objective of the curriculum designed in the department is to
expose its students to all branches of the discipline. The curriculum covers theoretical
conceptual and empirical aspects of the discipline.
This provides the students with necessary
conceptual awareness to undertake further specialized studies and research activities.
The intake for the Undergraduate Students is 120. For Post-graduate Course, the intake in
Political Science is 100
The Department intends to pursue academic excellence and all round development of
students, motivating them to attain cognitive and political skills, to become original thinkers,
honest researchers and responsible citizens, capable of playing an active and effective role in
the nation-building. Understanding its responsibilities towards women education and their
empowerment the department aims to make their education much more than a mere a quest
for degree.
Located within a majorly tribal Indian belt the department endeavours to bring education
especially to the tribal girls in order to make them empowered and also tries to instil among
them an appreciation for democracy and justice. The department also tries to work on the
challenging enterprise of understanding multifaceted societies and their politics. It sees its
role in providing young minds a space to engage in critical thinking and share their views
freely and also try to understand beliefs that are not their own. It seeks to create an
environment where young women could learn to think analytically and reflect critically. The
department wishes to contribute to the development of an intellectual and academic
environment in which a peaceful and harmonious society based on the principles of fairness
and justice can be achieved.
Our mission to engage with teaching and research of a high standard and quality
in the field of Political Science with an interdisciplinary approach whenever necessary. And pursue studies
in socio-political processes in order to address the challenges faced by the society and state. To develop
critical insight and create original, innovative and creative ideas among students to create future citizens
with moral commitment towards rights, liberties and freedom that individuals enjoy.
